TELL someone OFF!
to tell (someone) off (regañar)
Muy pocos alumnos, tanto los que tenéis un nivel
avanzado, como los de nivel intermedio, sois conscientes de la existencia de
este phrasal verb tan común. Todos los que no os lo sabéis ¡os merecéis una buena regañina! o a good telling off, como diríamos en inglés.
Tell off es un phrasal verb separable.
Esto significa que se puede decir tanto:

teacher told the student off.

teacher told off the
student.
|
Pero cuando sustituimos el nombre, the student, por el pronombre, her,
el pronombre tiene que ir en medio.
Es decir:

Why are you telling me off? I
didn’t do anything.
|
¿Por qué me estás regañando? Yo no he hecho nada.
|
|
She’s going to tell us off because of this.
|
Nos va a echar una bronca por esto.
|
|
Did he tell you off for arriving late?
|
¿Te regañó por llegar tarde?
|
|
Why
do you always have to tell me off for everything I do?
|
¿Por qué me tienes que regañar por todo lo que
hago?

Calm down. I’m
not going to tell you off.
|
Tranquilo. No te voy a regañar.
