Because we left off with a ‘knock, knock joke’ yesterday, we’d like to begin our Wordy Wednesdays with some vocabulary on… DOORS. Yes, doors!

To open the door:  abrir la puerta

''Can you open the door for me? My hands are full''

"¿Me puedes abrir la puerta? ¡Voy cargada!"

To close the door: cerrar la puerta

''Close the door please. I would like to talk privately.''

''Cierra la puerta por favor, me gustaría hablar en privado.''

To go out the door: salir por la puerta

''Where is David?'' - ''He just went out the door!''-

¿Dónde está David? - ¡Justo acaba de salir por la puerta!-

 To lock: cerrar con llave/trancar

''I always lock the door when I leave, it’s better to be safe than sorry!''

''Siempre cierro la puerta con llave cuando salgo, más vale prevenir que curar.''

Leave the door ajar: dejar la puerta entreabierta/entornar/arrimar

''I like to leave the door ajar so that a little air can come in.''

''Me gusta dejar la puerta entreabierta para que entre un poco de aire.''

Reinforced door: puerta blindada

''I have decided to install a reinforced door because a gang of criminals has been robbing some houses in the neighborhood recently.''

''He decidido instalar una puerta blindada porque una banda de criminales ha estado robando por el barrio recientemente.''

Peephole: mirilla

''Before you open the door, look through peephole to find out who it is.''

''Antes de abrir la puerta, mira por la mirilla para ver quién es.''

Handle: picaporte

''Do you have the telephone number of the handyman? My son broke the handle and the door cannot open.''

''¿Tienes el teléfono de un manitas? Mi hijo rompió el picaporte y la puerta no se puede abrir.''

Bolt: cierra la puerta con pestillo/cerrojo

For your security, bolt the door. 

Por tu seguridad, cierra la puerta con pestillo.

Doormat: felpudo

Have you seen my new doormat? It's so cool, isn't it?

''¿Has visto mi nuevo felpudlo?. Está guay, ¿no?''

If someone calls you a doormat, it isn't a good thing. It means people 'walk all over you', take advantage of you. You gotta be stronger!
